BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Tingley Gets Rare Start Behind Plate

Convinced that seeing is believing, Angel catcher Ron Tingley told his wife, Robin, to attend Saturday night’s game at Anaheim Stadium. “She wanted to make sure I’m really coming to the ballpark every day when I leave the house,” he said. “She says, ‘Do you really play for the Angels?’ ”

He does, but not often. Tingley’s start against Toronto Saturday night was only his third of the season and his fourth appearance, a situation he is trying to accept with good humor.

“People ask why I’m not playing, and it’s just a decision Buck (Rodgers) made, going with Lance (Parrish) and backing him up with Mike (Fitzgerald),” Tingley said. “It’s not easy to sit on the bench, but I’ve got to try and keep as ready as possible with extra hitting so I don’t get too far behind.

“I’m where I want to be, in the big leagues. If this is my role, this is my role. Everybody’s got a role and I accept it. I’m not a troublemaker. I’m just going to do this to the best of my ability.”

The Angels intend to put Parrish on the 15-day disabled list today, retroactive to May 5, because of a bone spur in his right elbow. His spot on the roster will be taken by outfielder Jose Gonzalez, who hit .326 for triple-A Edmonton with two home runs and 14 RBIs in 26 games. Gonzalez is expected to join the team today.

Center fielder Junior Felix missed Saturday night’s game because of a slightly sprained right ankle, sustained Friday night when Toronto’s Pat Tabler stepped on his foot while reaching for a high throw at first base in the third inning. “It’s not that bad,” said Felix, the Angels’ RBI leader with 26. “We’ll see how it is (Sunday) and maybe I can play.”

Outfielder John Morris (strained rib cage muscle) took batting practice Saturday and said he felt “noticeably better” than he did Friday. However, Rodgers said he would probably hold Morris out of the lineup until Tuesday. . . . Pitcher Don Robinson had no stiffness in his back Saturday after throwing Friday. He remains on the disabled list. . . . Bobby Rose is scheduled to return to the lineup today after missing four games to rest his sore back and work on his hitting. He has five hits in his last 39 at-bats, reducing his batting average to .215. . . . Third baseman Gary Gaetti took a seven-game errorless streak into Saturday’s game, his longest streak of the season. He has improved offensively, too, with hits in 13 of his previous 15 games.
