Mac Bernd, superintendent of the San Marcos Unified School District for six years, will become superintendent of the Little Rock, Ark., school district July 1.

Bernd, 48, leaves the 9,600-student San Marcos district for a school system with 26,000 pupils. A South Carolina recruiting firm called him about the Arkansas opening in April, and he accepted the post last week, he said.

“I’m torn between leaving the people I love in San Marcos and looking at the condition (of education) in this state,” Bernd said. “I think superintendents have been put in the position of rearranging the deck chairs of the Titanic.”
