Decathlete Schwepker Earns Berth to Trials

John Schwepker of San Gabriel qualified for next month’s U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in New Orleans in winning the decathlon at the Occidental College Invitational last weekend.

Schwepker, the NCAA Division II champion for Southeast Missouri State in 1988, scored a personal-best 7,949 points to surpass the qualifying standard of 7,850 points.

Schwepker’s marks for the two-day event included 10.93 seconds for the 100 meters, 23 feet 10 1/2 inches (long jump), 43-4 (shotput), 6-4 3/4 (high jump), 48.92 (400 meters), 14.81 (110 high hurdles), 16-4 3/4 (pole vault), 184-5 (javelin) and 4:19.24 (1,500 meters).

“It’s satisfying that all that training has paid off,” said Schwepker, who resigned as assistant track coach at Cal State Los Angeles after last season to prepare for the Trials.

Honor roll: San Marino High swimmer Alex Kim was selected as one of 10 boys’ finalists for a scholar athlete-of-the-year award that was presented by the California Interscholastic Federation and Reebok.

Ten boys and 10 girls were selected as finalists from 650 applicants.

Michelle Terese Wagner of Lynbrook High and Terry Mann of Sunny Hills were chosen as winners of the award and a $2,000 scholarship.

Still alive: The Mt. San Antonio College baseball team will play Rancho Santiago Friday in the second round of the Southern California regional of the state tournament at Pierce College.

The Mounties advanced to the second round of the four-team double-elimination tournament by winning two of three games from San Diego Mesa last weekend. Mt. SAC won the series on the strength of Brett Tomkos’ complete-game performance in a 2-0 victory in the third game.

The winner of Friday’s game between Mt. SAC and Rancho Santiago will play the winner of the game between Pierce and Riverside. The winner of the regional advances to the four-team final next week.

“This team has overachieved all season, but we’re right where we should be at this point,” Mt. SAC Coach Art Mazmanian said.

Season-ender: The Citrus College baseball team ended its season with a 31-10 record after the Owls were defeated by Cuesta, 12-5, Saturday in the first-round of the Southern California Regional of the state tournament.

Citrus lost to Cuesta, 6-2, on Friday but tied the series with a 5-3 victory Saturday morning.

Cuesta advanced to the second round and will be part of a four-team tournament with Cerritos, Los Angeles Harbor and East Los Angeles.

Season-ender II: The Azusa Pacific softball team was eliminated from the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics Tri-District II tournament after losing to Hawaii-Hilo, 7-1 and 14-1, at Alamosa, Colo.

Azusa Pacific, which lost in the Tri-District final for the second consecutive year, finished 31-20.

Hawaii-Hilo advanced to the final this week at Pensacola, Fla.

Wrap it up: The Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Los Angeles baseball teams finished third and fourth, respectively, in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

Pomona took three games from Cal State L.A. last weekend to finish 23-30 and 16-13 in conference.

Cal State L.A. finished 21-29 and 14-16 in the CCAA.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Riverside tied for the conference championship with 20-10 records.

All-Americans: Tennis players Rebecca Huereque and Julie Slattery, who helped lead Cal Poly Pomona to the NCAA Division II championship, have been named All-Americans.

Huereque lost to eventual-champion Michelle King in the semifinals of the individual championships last week at Amarillo, Tex. Slattery lost to King in the quarterfinals.
