BUENA PARK — Commute traffic along the Santa Ana Freeway was backed up for more than an hour Wednesday evening as police and fire officials successfully helped a woman off of an overpass after she reportedly threatened to jump.
The woman, who was not injured or identified, police said, apparently climbed over an eight-foot fence along the Western Avenue overpass about 6 p.m.
Police stopped traffic on both sides of the freeway between Knott Avenue and Beach Boulevard so officers could talk to the woman.
After about an hour, officers helped her into a basket attached to a hydraulic arm on a firetruck. She was lowered, and police held her for questioning, Buena Park Sgt. Stu Myhren said.
Northbound traffic was backed up to Katella Avenue in Anaheim, while southbound traffic was backed up to at least Santa Fe Springs, the California Highway Patrol reported.
