Because of unexpected demand, John Wayne Airport officials on Wednesday reopened the popular remote, off-site parking lot north of the San Diego Freeway on Main Street.

“The remote parking lot will be open until further notice,” said Airport Director Jan Mittermeier.

Airport spokeswoman Pat Ware said officials took the unusual action because of an unanticipated increase in travelers’ use of the airport.

“We’re just seeing an increased demand in traveling,” Ware said. “I don’t know if it’s because of the recent drop in air fares, or whether more people are switching to this airport because they feel it’s safer, given the recent troubles in Los Angeles.”

The remote lot is the same facility that travelers tried unsuccessfully to keep open after the new, $14-per-day airport garages opened in September, 1990. They won a small victory, however, when airport officials later set aside a portion of the parking at the Thomas F. Riley Terminal for long-term use.

Since then, the remote lot on Main Street has been used only for overflow during busy holiday periods.

Situated between MacArthur Boulevard and Red Hill Avenue, the remote lot offers free shuttle service to the Thomas F. Riley Terminal from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. at about 20-minute intervals.

The fees are $1 per hour, up to a maximum of $7 per day.

The lot adds 1,829 spaces to the 4,872 in the garages next to the passenger terminal.
