SAN DIEGO : Vigil Over Cuts Staged at SDSU
Faculty and students from San Diego State University planned to hold an all-night vigil Saturday in front of the Administration Building to protest a proposed $11-million cutback at the school.
The demonstration was the latest in a series of protests since SDSU President Thomas B. Day announced the cuts last week.
University officials said the proposed cuts were prompted by the state’s budget crisis. Day has proposed eliminating 10 departments and firing more than 100 tenured instructors. On Friday, faculty members across the board offered to take pay cuts in order to save the threatened departments.
Another protest is scheduled for noon Monday, when faculty and students are expected to be joined by community supporters.
