Two 17-year-old boys were killed in a drive-by shooting early Sunday in Pacoima after they had stopped their car to check a faulty tire, police said.

One of the boys, Jesus Lopez, was pronounced dead at Pacifica Hospital of the Valley at 2:17 a.m., police said. The other, Jose Calderon, died at Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills at 4:30 a.m., they said. Both victims lived in Pacoima.

Calderon stopped the older-model Chevrolet he was driving on Montague Street near Rincon Avenue about 1 a.m. because something was wrong with the tire, Los Angeles Police Detective Richard Knapp said. Calderon and Lopez were riding with two friends, ages 14 and 18, who sat in the back seat.

As the group sat in the car, the occupants of a car passing in the opposite direction opened fire and yelled a gang name, Knapp said. Calderon and Lopez were hit but their friends escaped injury.

Calderon drove the car about a quarter of a mile to the intersection of El Dorado Avenue and Montague, where residents called for help, Knapp said.

Police do not know whether Calderon and Lopez were members of a gang. No one had been arrested in the crime, Knapp said.
