A Latino man in his 20s, possibly an undocumented immigrant, died at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center early Sunday after being struck by a car near the San Onofre Border Patrol checkpoint, officials said.

Border Patrol officials said the man was not being chased. They said they learned of the accident about 9:30 p.m. Saturday when a passing motorist reported a body lying near the busy, southbound lanes of the Interstate 5.

The California Highway Patrol in San Diego County Saturday night reportedly interviewed the driver at the scene of the accident, but CHP dispatchers in Oceanside said they had no information available on the previous night’s fatality.

Border Patrol agents who went to the scene “found the man didn’t have any vital signs, so they administered CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and he revived, but later died at the hospital,” said Steven Kean, a spokesman for the Border Patrol.

The man, who carried no identification, was taken to Mission Hospital and died at 2:47 a.m., according to the Orange County coroner’s office. The victim has not been identified.

Previously this year, there have been five deaths of people evading the Border Patrol at the San Onofre checkpoint.

The Border Patrol said the accident occurred about a half-mile south of the checkpoint. The man’s body was found lying partially on a ramp leading to the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, agents reported.

The Border Patrol “learned about it from a (motorist) who was southbound and saw the body and then came back to the checkpoint to tell our agents,” Kean said.

According to Kean, the driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian stopped after the accident and remained there during the CHP investigation. The driver’s identity was not available.

In recent years, there have been frequent fatal accidents at or near the San Onofre Border Patrol checkpoint. Almost all of the previous accidents involved undocumented immigrants who were trying to elude Border Patrol agents either during a chase or by crossing the freeway to bypass the checkpoint along the beach.

However, in the Saturday night incident, officers at the checkpoint said it was not known if the man was trying to get around the checkpoint or was simply trying to cross the highway.

Kean said the man was struck by a southbound car.
