UCSD Wins Another Water Polo Title

UC San Diego overcame a two-goal deficit to win its third consecutive women’s water polo championship Sunday in Washington, D.C. at the U.S. Nationals.

The third-seeded Tritons defeated top-ranked UC Davis, 10-9, as Jamie Dailey’s fifth goal with 1 minute 10 seconds remaining put the match out of reach. Davis scored with 45 seconds to pull within one point, and the Aggies got the ball with 15 seconds left but could not get a shot on goal.

Twice in the fourth quarter UC Davis had man-up advantages but were unable to score.

Davis led early in the game, 3-1 and 5-4, before UCSD got untracked. Player of the Year Brenda Reiton scored three times and Jane Quin-Harkin and Allison Wesfall scored once apiece for the Tritons.

Dailey was named the tournament’s most valuable player. She and Reiton were joined on the All-American first team by Julie Swail; Westfall was named to the second team.

UCSD reached the finals by beating Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the semifinals, 8-6.

RACK AND FIELD

David Loshonkohl of San Diego Mesa College won the state title in the hammer with a throw of 180 feet 2 inches at the California Community College Championships. He also placed sixth in the discus (146-4).

Teammates James Hurtado (170-10) and Alex Halston (167-6) finished fifth and sixth in the hammer. Hurtado had the men’s other highest finish, fourth in the shot put (50-2), and took fifth in the discus (147-0).

Other fifth-place finishers were Hector Hernandez (1,500 meters, 3:59.66) and Gabino Tledo (5,000, 14:49.65).

Mesa (43 points) finished fourth, trailing Riverside (132), Long Beach City (119) and Bakersfield (51 1/2).

SOFTBALL

Sophomore first baseman Aimee Reinard was named most valuable player for University of San Diego (31-14). Reinard batted .372 with 30 runs, 37 RBIs, three home runs and .562 slugging percentage.

Mission Bay graduate Tiffany Wasilewski (19-8, 1.44 ERA) was named top pitcher and Marianne Stahl (.376, eight stolen bases) the top hitter. Melissa Reinard won the Golden Glove Award for her flawless outfield play.

The Coaches Award went to Laura Cisneros (.340, 31 runs, 31 RBIs), a Marian Catholic graduate. Most Improved Player was sophomore Cindy Harris, who converted to a switch-hitter midway through the season, batted .379 over the final 10 games and raised her overall average to .281

Team captain and Madison High graduate June Andrews (.314, 37 runs, 17 RBIs) was named Miss Hustle, and San Pasqual’s Julie Doria received the Senior Award.

JUNIOR TENNIS

Unseeded Vo Chu of San Diego scored a 6-2, 6-4 victory over seventh-seeded Tony Piccuta of Monterey to reach the boys’ 16 semifinals at today’s Jack Kramer Invitational at Canyon Hills Country Club in Escondido. Chu reached the quarterfinals when No. 2 Cecil Mamiit of Los Angeles defaulted.

GOLF

La Jolla’s John Rudolph tied for sixth place in the boys’ 13-14 PING Phoenix Junior Championship at the par-72 Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Arizona. His second-round 82 gave him a two-day 158 total, nine strokes behind Phoenix’s Justin Miller.

MOTORCYLE RACING

San Diego’s Lee Shierts rode a Suzuki to third place on the 2.52-mile Road Atlanta circuit in the Western Eastern Roadracers’ Assn., Formula USA National Championship. Shierts trailed Donald Jacks of St. Cloud, Fla., and Michael Martin of Carrollton, Texas. All rode Suzukis.

DRAG BOAT RACING

Lakeside’s Joe Podowski clocked 123.96 m.p.h. at the Castaic Lake Recreation Center to win the pro gas jet championship at the Mission Foods Nationals. Podowski, defeated Tucson’s John Dyer.

San Diego’s Emmett Pagliuso (152.28) took second to Brea’s Rod Corning (145.16) in the blown alcohol flat division. Corning negotiated the course in 7.351 seconds, Pagliuso in 7.284.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Team Venice defeated Team San Diego, 15-12, to win the first Women’s Professional Volleyball Assn.’s $10,000 Coors Light Power 4s in Fresno. Venice came back from a 7-2 deficit in the four-woman beach volleyball match. The San Diego team of Deb Richardson, Barbara Fontana, Charlotte Mitchel, Dennis Shupryt-Knoop and Jackie Silva won $3,000. None are from San Diego.

Carlsbad’s Nancy Reno competed for Team Venice, which won $5,500. Team Hermosa Beach was third, Team Fresno fourth.
