Dr. Bergen: “Murphy Brown” star Candice Bergen, who flunked out of the University of Pennsylvania in 1965, returned Monday to receive an honorary degree. In cap and gown, Bergen thrust her fists skyward after the hood signifying her doctor of laws degree was draped across her shoulders at commencement exercises. The 46-year-old actress, whose television character was giving birth in Monday night’s episode, entered Penn with its Class of ’67. She dropped out to pursue modeling in New York. School officials “politely asked me to move on” after my sophomore year, she said. She had flunked basic “gut courses” in painting and opera. “I always did respect them for that. That was a very strong lesson,” Bergen said.
