An IRS official declined Tuesday to say whether the agency will investigate former Kentucky basketball guard Dirk Minniefield’s claim that he received $100,000 a year in “tax-free money” while he was a player.

Minniefield made the comment during an interview Monday night as part of an Arts and Entertainment Network feature about amateurism in athletics.

The taped interview was made at the Fayette County, Ky., Detention Center, where Minniefield was completing a one-year sentence for writing bad checks. He was released from jail Friday.

Minniefield, 31, who played at Kentucky from 1980-83, said he made the money selling books of season tickets and from summer jobs and other sources.
