Compton : Grand Jury Inquiry Asked of Slow Response to Riots
The Compton City Council will call for a Grand Jury investigation of three police agencies and the governor’s office following three days of rebellion, looting and arson.
The council agreed on a 4-0 vote Tuesday to draw up a resolution similar to one passed by the Long Beach City Council on May 5 demanding that the slow response of authorities to violence and looting be investigated.
Compton Councilman Omar Bradley was absent during the voting.
The Long Beach resolution seeks a general inquest into official response, whereas Compton will ask the Grand Jury specifically to look at the response by the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, National Guard and Gov. Pete Wilson’s office. The resolution is expected to be voted on Tuesday.
The council has commended the Compton Police Department for quick response to the lawlessness.
