FOUNTAIN VALLEY : City Agrees to Begin Meetings at 7 p.m.

The City Council unanimously agreed Tuesday to start its meetings one hour earlier after receiving a report that its meetings had the latest starting time in the county.

A survey of 30 Orange County cities showed that Fountain Valley was the only city to start its council meetings at 8 p.m. Fourteen cities start their council meetings at 7 p.m.

“I have brought this before the council because it bothered me that we don’t have the participation that you see in other cities,” Councilman John Collins said. “I know we don’t have the exciting things happening in our city that you have in other cities, or the controversial things, which I’m grateful for, but I think 8 o’clock is a psychological (mind) set that it’s too late to attend a council meeting.”

Councilman George Scott said, however, that residents will attend meetings when an issue arises in their neighborhood, regardless of the meeting time.
