COSTA MESA : Pipe Bomb Found in Garage Disassembled
Authorities found a pipe bomb inside an underground parking garage Wednesday morning and quickly disassembled the explosive device without incident or evacuation of commercial businesses.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad rushed to the garage at Irvine Avenue and 17th Street about 10:30 a.m. after it was discovered by Warren Lee Dusseau, 48. He found the pipe bomb beside a late-model sedan. Dusseau removed the six-inch bomb and placed it by the wall outside the garage, Sgt. Tom A. Curtis said.
The sheriff’s bomb squad was able to take the bomb apart in 20 minutes, Curtis said.
“Fortunately, it didn’t go off,” Curtis said. “It could have been worse.”
Sheriff’s Lt. Robert Rivas said it could have been very dangerous if the bomb had exploded.
“The metal attachments are like bullets,” Rivas said.
Most people in the area were unaware of the bomb scare.
“We haven’t heard anything,” said Linda Lacias, a sales clerk at the nearby 7-Eleven convenience store. “A customer told us what happened. It didn’t affect us at all.”
