SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

“Doo Bop,” a single from Miles Davis’ last studio recording, is to be released on Monday. That’s the late trumpeter’s birthday. Davis, who died in September of pneumonia, would have been 66.

The album is a hip-hop project for Warner Bros. Records, and the single is the title track. The number features a rap about Davis delivered by Easy Mo Bee, who also produced the album. Davis plays behind the rap, according to Matt Pierson, director of artists and repertoire for Warner. “It’s all loops and samples, with the samples based on ‘Summer Madness,’ which was a hit for Kool and the Gang,” Pierson said, adding that the album is due for release in May.

More Miles: The trumpeter can be seen tonight on “Miles Davis and Friends,” airing on the Bravo channel at 9. The show, taped in Paris last July, features a host of Davis’ former sidemen, including Herbie Hancock and Joe Zawinul.

In the Bins: Previously unreleased, unaccompanied piano treatments of such evergreens as “Liza” and “These Foolish Things” make up the 21 tracks on Volumes 4 and 5 of “Erroll Garner: Solo Time!” on EmArcy. . . . Los Angeles bandleader Mark Masters spotlights saxophonist Billy Harper and trombonist Jimmy Knepper playing Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” and Ellington’s “Passion Flower” on “Priestess” (Capri Records).

Critic’s Choice: The double bill of pianist Benny Green’s trio and drummer Tony William’s quintet, appearing Tuesday through Sunday at Catalilna Bar & Grill, provides Los Angeles area listeners with a good look at two of the finest working bands in jazz.

Green, who’s backed by young bass giant Christian McBride and drummer Carl Allen, can be funky one minute, flashy the next; Williams, an artful basher, brings along trumpet sensation Wallace Roney and pianist Mulgrew Miller for alternately edgy and warm outings.
