Share

Individuals and families who suffered personal property loss as a result of the fires and rioting in Los Angeles may apply for state and federal cash grants that could total $21,500, the state Department of Social Services announced Thursday.

Unlike federal loan programs, these grants do not have to be repaid.

Grants of up to $11,500 are available to pay for repair or replacement of personal vehicles, essential repairs to homes, payment of medical or dental bills, funeral expenses, or debris removal if those costs are not covered by insurance or other group programs.

Residents may qualify for supplementary disaster benefits of up to $10,000 to pay for essentials such as clothing lost because of the unrest. Free legal help is available to residents trying to recoup their personal losses from businesses, such as cleaning establishments or pawnshops.

Applicants will not be able to receive cash grants at the application centers because inspection and verification of claims must first take place.

All disaster application centers and the Federal Emergency Management Agency center will be closed Sunday and Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. They will reopen on Tuesday.
