COUNTYWIDE : Gray Skies Don’t Deter Beach Crowds

The skies were gloomy, but that didn’t keep crowds from flocking to the beach Monday, the last day of the extended Memorial Day weekend, officials said.

A heavy layer of fog and low clouds over the Ventura County coastline didn’t clear to hazy sunshine until about 2 p.m., said Steve Ramirez, a spokesman at the Ventura State Beaches Lifeguard station. But that apparently didn’t matter to many, he said.

“We had a lot of folks at the beach,” Ramirez said. “But I’m sure we would have had a lot more if we had some heat.”

As of late Monday, 44 arrests for driving under the influence had been made during the period that began at 6 p.m. Friday and ended at midnight Sunday, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The only traffic fatality reported occurred Friday night in a single-vehicle crash on California 33. A 55-year-old Ventura man died of massive head injuries after his car overturned nine miles north of Matilija Creek. CHP officials said they don’t know why the driver lost control of his vehicle.

No other major accidents or incidents were reported in the county for the holiday weekend by late Monday.
