Track Debris Causes Wrecks, Says Andretti

Cold that prevented tires from gripping the track was blamed for 10 wrecks involving 13 cars in the Indianapolis 500, but Michael Andretti said weather was not the only problem.

“I think Roberto’s (Guerrero) and (Phillipe) Gache’s (wrecks) were cold tires, but the rest I believe were due to debris on the track,” said Andretti, who led 160 of the 200 laps before retiring with engine problems.

“I remember running over debris. I dragged a piece half the straightaway before it fell out. I was always concerned.”
