Dan Quayle on Murphy Brown

Share

It appears that the vast majority of commentaries on Quayle’s comments regarding Murphy Brown have missed the point. What Quayle is decrying is not single moms. I believe he, and most all of us, deeply feel for those in that situation. Quayle is calling for television to responsibly reflect ideals for which society should strive. Murphy Brown is a fictional TV character and that is precisely the point. The show’s creator had the choice of encouraging the ideal of family or glamorizing a situation that discourages the ideal of family. Single parenthood is not something for which we as a people should strive. Marriage and family are.

Can someone explain how we have come so far as to glamorize the wrong and call the right a 1950s sitcom?
