Northwest Offers Summer Adult-Child Deal: Northwest Airlines, breaking ranks with American Airlines’ new simplified fare structure, announced that it was cutting domestic fares in half for family travelers this summer. United Airlines quickly matched the promotion. The new Northwest fares, which must be purchased at least seven days in advance, let an adult and a child travel for the price of one within the continental United States. Tickets must be purchased by June 5 for travel Sept. 13 and require a Saturday night stay. The fares represent a major break with American’s widely publicized fare structure.
