PLEASANT VALLEY : $171,000 in Cuts OKd to Balance Budget

The Board of Trustees of the Pleasant Valley School District has voted to cut $171,000 worth of personnel expenses to balance its 1992-93 budget.

The board has approved the budget committee’s recommended reductions in the proposed $25.3-million fiscal package, which could be hit even harder once the state passes its budget.

“We may be looking at deeper cuts,” said Jan Maez, director of budget and fiscal services for the 6,700-student Camarillo-based district.

Much of the savings comes from leaving several positions vacant and reducing the hours that some employees will work.

A part-time clerical post in the district office will be left vacant to save $9,500. One groundsman position will be eliminated, and other employees will be offered early retirement to save a total of $60,000, Maez said.

The hours of two bus drivers will be cut to save $17,500. The drivers now work eight-hour days 12 months a year. One will be cut to six-hour days for 10 months, the other to six-hour days for 12 months, she said.

By shuffling duties and principals, and cutting almost half a principal’s position, the district was able to save $41,000.

Principal Ralph Alamillo will oversee Los Posas and Valle Lindo schools, although Valle Lindo will have a new assistant principal to pick up the slack. Paige Fisher, Valle Lindo principal, will be transferred to Las Nogales School.

The budget for the present year is $25.3 million. The district had to cut $200,000 at this time last year to balance that budget.
