A man shot and fatally wounded a woman during a domestic dispute Wednesday night, then killed himself, police said.

Police identified the woman as Adela Sanchez, 32. She was taken to UCI Medical Center in critical condition, said Police Lt. Trey Sirks. She was pronounced dead half an hour later.

The man was identified as Jose A. Baeza, 29. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was not known if the couple were married.

Sirks said that four children, ages 2 to 11, lived with the couple. Some of the children apparently witnessed the shooting, but none of them were injured.

Sirks said the shooting occurred shortly before 10 p.m. in an apartment in the 100 block of South Hamlin Street, near the intersection of Washington Avenue.

The area is just south of busy Chapman Avenue and is about half a mile from El Modena High School.

Police cordoned off the area on South Hamlin Street around the two-story apartment building.
