SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Sheriff’s homicide detectives said Thursday that evidence of recent drug activity was found in the secluded Jamul home where a couple was found shot to death and their young son wounded.

“We have discussed several scenarios and have a variety of theories,” said Lt. John Tenwolde of the Sheriff’s Department.

Although he would not say what type of illegal drugs were found in the home, Tenwolde said investigators have evidence that drugs were used and “illicit materials” were packaged and stored there.

The body of Daniel Magoon, 51, was found Wednesday on the kitchen floor, and the body of his 32-year-old wife, Mary, was found on the floor of the guest bathroom. Both bodies had multiple gunshot wounds, Tenwolde said.

The Magoons’ 3-year-old son, Jeremy, who was hit in the head by a bullet that did not penetrate, was found lying in his bedclothes on a futon in the living room. Tenwolde said it is possible that the boy was struck by stray bullet. Jeremy remains in fair condition at Children Hospital.

Daniel II, the Magoon’s 7-year-old son who notified a passing jogger of the shootings shortly after 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, is staying with relatives after being treated for shock.

Tenwolde said investigators found no evidence of forcible entry into the house in the 3500 block of Steele Canyon Road, which is surrounded with a 6-foot fence of iron bars and has an electronically controlled gate across the driveway. Nor have they determined how many assailants entered the house, he said.

Tenwolde said investigators believe the shooting occurred several hours before its discovery. Firearms were discovered on the premises, but they apparently were not discharged in the confrontation, he said.
