SEAL BEACH : City Acts to Qualify for Measure M Funds

Officials here on Tuesday beat the June 30 deadline to qualify for Measure M funds, which means that the city is eligible to receive more than $200,000 annually from gasoline tax revenues.

The city met eligibility requirements by incorporating a growth management plan into its General Plan. The growth plan, which will ensure that further development does not surpass Seal Beach’s road capacity, was adopted unanimously by the City Council.

“You don’t want to have a major development without roads to adequately service the area,” said Lee Whittenberg, director of development services.

He said Measure M money will go toward city road improvements. The city hopes to hear whether it will get such money, and how much, before the next fiscal year.

Measure M was approved by county voters in the November, 1990, election. The measure established a half-cent gasoline sales tax for transportation.
