OXNARD : Victoria Avenue Bridge Dedicated

County and Oxnard city officials dedicated a bridge Friday over the Santa Clara River, but the total road-widening project on Victoria Avenue will not be finished until July.

“This is the busiest two-lane road in Ventura County,” Supervisor John Flynn said at the ribbon-cutting ceremony on the bridge near Oxnard.

The $4.2-million project widens an existing bridge and roadway to four lanes between Olivas Park Drive and Gonzales Road, a stretch of 1.8 miles. In 1977, when the original bridge and two-lane road were built, the daily vehicle count was 6,500. Last year, the bridge carried 33,000 vehicles a day.

Although the new portion of the bridge is finished, crews have more work to do on the roadway north and south of the bridge, according to Ken Gordon, one of the county’s project managers. It will be mid- to late-July before all four lanes are officially open, he said.

About 22% of the money for the project came from state funds, with the balance from county funds, he said.

The contractor for the bridge was R. McKean Construction Inc., and the contractor for the paving and earthwork is D.W. Burhoe Construction Inc.
