Teachers Get Grants for Classroom Projects

The San Gabriel Education Foundation has awarded grants to teachers in the San Gabriel School District for creative classroom projects.

Barbara Gorton of the districtwide media lab received $5,000 for a consultant fee. Chris Murphy and Linda Olsen of the district disaster committee received $2,481 for a project that would secure computers in case of an earthquake.

Kirsten Stockman, Alicia Simpson, Shari Boultinghouse and Sue Christenson, kindergarten teachers at McKinley School, received $965 for expanding the school’s physical education equipment.

Page Christensen, Roosevelt Elementary School teacher, received $375 for a plastic binding system that allows teachers to make books out of students’ creative writing projects.

Ellen Peterson, a special-education teacher at Wilson Elementary School, received $450 for a project to strengthen students’ math skills. Sandra Neilson, also a special-education teacher at Wilson, received $497 for a project aimed at improving her students’ reading skills. Wilson kindergarten teachers Francois Polifroni and Karen Farer received $500 for two sand and water tables.

Roberto Garza, Spanish language teacher at Jefferson Intermediate School, received $400 to buy a Yamaha keyboard to help combine Spanish language skills with music.

Ruth Greer and Mary Beth Bensen, teachers at Washington Elementary School, received $800 for a science wagon that will bring science experiments to kindergarten through third-grade classrooms.
