SURFING BODY GLOVE CUP : Tour Leader, San Clemente’s Parsons Ousted in Main Event

U.S. champion Mike Parsons of San Clemente and current tour points leader Chris Brown of Santa Barbara were among the surfers eliminated in the main event third round Saturday at the $22,000 Body Glove Cup at Huntington State Beach.

Parsons finished third in his heat behind winner Vince De La Pena of Laguna Niguel and Jason Senn. Only the top two surfers in each heat advance to the quarterfinals.

Brown, the defending event champion, was eliminated by Laguna Niguel’s Pat O’Connell and Jeff Deffenbaugh of Huntington Beach.

Among the locals surfers advancing were San Clemente’s Shane Beschen, Dino Andino and Matt Archbold, Laguna Beach’s Jeff Booth, Newport Beach’s Richie Collins and former Seal Beach resident Marty Thomas.

In the bodyboarding division, San Clemente amateur Brian Wise, U.S. champion Mike Stewart and defending event champion Ben Severson won first-round heats.

Competition in bodyboarding and surfing resumes at 7:30 a.m. today and concludes with the surfing finals.
