The deadline to apply for many government aid programs is July 2. Information about the variety of federal and state assistance programs is available by calling the disaster hot line at (800) 525-0321. The programs include:

Food Bank: This program offers food packages to low-income people. (213) 234-3030 or Red Cross (213) 739-5200.

Disaster Housing Assistance: Helps people who cannot or should not live in their homes because of damage or other disaster-related reasons. Also, provides mortgage or rental assistance for people whose income was affected by the disaster.

Grants: Individuals and families who have disaster-related needs not covered by other programs can apply for grants of up to $11,500, with an additional $10,000 available through a supplemental state-funded grant program for individuals with needs that exceed the standard grant.

Loans: To cope with uninsured disaster-related losses and damage, individuals may be eligible for low-interest loans (personal--$20,000, home--$100,000 and business--up to $500,000) through the Small Business Administration.

Unemployment Assistance: Provides weekly benefit payments to those out of work because of the disaster, including the self-employed and others not normally covered under regular unemployment insurance programs.
