All for none: It turns out that...

All for none: It turns out that “None of the Above” won a somewhat tainted victory over Green Party candidate Roger Donaldson in the 53rd Assembly primary.

Donaldson, you may recall, failed to gain a place on the environmentalist party’s November ballot because he picked up 171 votes while “None of the Above” attracted 207 in the South Bay district.

Now, the L.A. League of Conservation Voters informs us that he wanted to lose. After his name had been placed on the primary ballot, Donaldson realized that Democratic candidate Debra Bowen “would need the support of Green Party activists . . . in November.”

He then “asked all Green Party members to vote for ‘None of the Above’ (an alternative for that party) . . . a rare sacrifice in these days of me instead of us .”

We feel pretty foolish but we must retract our post-primary analysis that “ ‘None,’ a previous unknown, appears to be one of the brightest political prospects to come along in years.”

Would a Bush or Clinton supporter be this angry? After someone stole a “Ross Perot for President” sign off his front lawn, Bill Bailey of La Canada Flintridge placed an ad in the city’s Valley Sun, offering $100 “to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction” of the culprit.

The case is still unsolved but Bailey already has a general idea who did it: “Probably a Republican or Democrat in the neighborhood.”

One of the above.

What do you do with a used police chief? We’re sure it was a coincidence. But in the midst of the Police Commission’s struggle to persuade Chief Daryl Gates to retire, Mayor Bradley announced the establishment of “the first Recycling Slogan Contest for all city employees.”

He has worked with police dogs, though: When Gates, who has a home in San Clemente, hinted on Monday that he might run for office down there, Assemblyman Gil Ferguson (R-Newport Beach) barked that Gates “shouldn’t think he can come to Orange County and get elected even to dogcatcher.”

That was a cheap shot. We checked with San Clemente animal authorities and they told us the city has no such elected post.

Riot aftermath: Attempting to photograph the looting of a store on La Brea Avenue during the riots, Dione Benson was hit over the head by someone who “violated me in the worst possible way he could violate a professional photographer--he took away my camera.” Benson later returned to take an ironic shot of the site. How to insure a pleasant drive: Funny thing. One motorist who wasn’t being tailgated or cut off on the Ventura Freeway the other morning was the dressed-for-success woman in a late model Porsche with the license plate:
