Contests Galore on Tap at the Fair

If eating a slice of pie really fast with just your face or throwing cow chips with just your bare hands sounds like almost as much fun as jumping rope until you drop, then the Del Mar Fair is the place for you to be June 16-July 5. These are just some of the numerous contests held every day throughout the fair for children and adults alike.

The contests are free with admission to the fair, and no pre-registration is required in most cases. Winners will be awarded ribbons for first, second and third place.

Here are some of the contests:

DAILY

All ages are welcome to participate in tug-of-war, egg toss, sack race and Hula-Hoop contests. The events start at 3 p.m. at the Contest Court in the Infield.

Contestants of all ages can give their best “neigh” or other animal noise at 1 p.m. at the O’Brien Stage. The audience will judge.

ALMOST DAILY

A pie-eating contest for children chosen at random from the audience will be held at noon every day except Tuesdays and Sundays in Pipsqueak Plaza.

All ages can participate in a cow-milking contest, the winner being the one who can extract the most milk in a specified time. The contest is conducted at 4:30 p.m. June 16-18, June 21-30, and July 1. in Ring No. 1. On June 27, the contest will take place at 5 p.m.

Hog calling for all ages will be held in the livestock area at varying dates and times. Visitors can consult their daily program for specific information.

TUESDAY, JUNE 16

A bubble-gum blowing contests for kids will be held at 11 a.m. in Pipsqueak Plaza and repeat on the next two Kids Days, June 23 and June 30.

The used shoe kickoff for kids to see who can kick their shoe the farthest will be held at 4 p.m. at the Contest Court in the Infield.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17

The first baby to crawl--not walk--across the finish line wins in the Baby Derby Preliminary at 5 p.m. on the Community Stage. Parents can use toys and other forms of coaxing to get their tot from one side of a mat to another. Other baby prelims will be June 23, 28, 30 and July 5.

THURSDAY, JUNE 18

Senior citizens can participate in a variety of quick contests including the person with the most grandchildren, person who has traveled the farthest and the couple who have been married the longest. Contests start at 1:30 p.m. on the Community Stage.

Children can participate in a Frisbee toss at 4 p.m. at the Contest Court in the infield.

FRIDAY, JUNE 19

Contestants are given two chances to see who can throw a cow chip the farthest, at 4 p.m. at the Contest Court in the infield. This contest for all ages repeats June 23 and 27.

A country dance contest for couples of all ages will be held at 3 p.m. on the Community Stage.

SATURDAY, JUNE 20

If you think you’ve got the hairiest, skinniest or best legs or knobbiest knees around, this contest for all ages has male and female categories and is held at 6 p.m. on the Fiesta Stage. Audience response determines the winners.

SUNDAY, JUNE 21

Look-alike contests will be held for parents and their children. Mother/daughter and mother/son contest is at 11 a.m. on the Community Stage. A father/daughter and father/son contest follows at 11:30 a.m.

Twins who look the most alike or the least alike can compete at noon on the Community Stage.

Best-looking red hair contest at 12:30 p.m. on the Community Stage. All ages.

Children can participate in a team watermelon roll at 4 p.m. at the Contest Court in the infield. Repeats June 26.

All ages can participate in a watermelon eating contest at 4:30 p.m. at the Contest Court in the infield. Repeats June 26.

MONDAY, JUNE 22

Children working in teams of six compete to be the first to make and eat an ice cream sundae, at 4 p.m. at the Contest Court in the infield. Repeats June 26.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24

Children will be given a chance to take a swing at a horse pinata at 4 p.m. at the Contest Court in the Infield.

SATURDAY, JUNE 27

The Alta Dena Dairy Butter Churning and Milk Drinking Contest is for all ages. Contestants who can churn butter or drink milk out of a calf’s feeding bottle the fastest are the winners. Contest begins at 3 p.m. in Ring No. 1.

SUNDAY, JUNE 28

The fair supplies the jumping frogs. Contestants of all ages have to supply the encouragement for their frog to jump the farthest, from noon-3 p.m. at the Contest Court in the Infield.

MONDAY, JUNE 29

Adults and children will be tested for their endurance and ability to do designated jump rope tricks, at 4 p.m. at the Contest Court in the Infield.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 1

Each contestant makes his or her funniest face and the audience determines the winner at 6 p.m. on the Fiesta Stage.

THURSDAY, JULY 2

A ballroom dance contest for adults for the best waltz, fox trot, tango, polka and swing will be held at 4 p.m. on the Community Stage.

SUNDAY, JULY 5

The longest hair, beard, fingernails, most macho mustache and best tattoo will be determined by audience response at 11 a.m. on the Community Stage.
