JW’s, Mondavi Will Pour It On

This is definitely the week for wine dinners. The wines of Firestone Vineyards will flow for a five-course dinner Friday night at JW’s in the Anaheim Marriott, where chef John McLaughlin will prepare such delicacies as local prawns with red pepper gnocchi (accompanied by Fume Blanc) and venison chop Bordelaise (paired with Cabernet Sauvignon). Three different vintages (‘84, ’87 and ‘88) of the renowned Opus One, plus Robert Mondavi wines, will be poured at a dinner on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Robert Mondavi Wine & Food Center. Courses by chef Rosanne Ruiz include grilled veal wrapped in pancetta, with roast garlic bread pudding, and warm goat cheese with sun-dried tomatoes, mesclun and roasted pine nuts. On Wednesday, chef Robert Reash Jr. will create a five-course dinner to accompany the wines of Flora Springs at John Dominis. Offerings include hot smoked walleye pike in potato gallette with black caviar and red onion-orange butter sauce (served with a 1990 Chardonnay) and braised saddle of elk with peperonata compote and roasted apple pear coulis (with 1988 Trilogy). Learn the procedures, techniques and secrets of French cooking from a master chef at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Le Gourmet Bistro. The restaurant’s chef-owner, Lap Trung Huynh, will demonstrate preparations, give tips and recipes, then invite participants to savor all the dishes at a light champagne dinner. In Swedish tradition, Gustaf Anders will celebrate summer with a Midsommer Smorgasbord on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. As part of a daylong festival at South Coast Plaza Village in Santa Ana, the restaurant will serve such Swedish treats as whole poached salmon, pickled herring and meatballs.
