Northridge’s Richardson, CLU’s McMillin Sign Contracts

Scott Richardson of Cal State Northridge and Darrell McMillin of Cal Lutheran have signed professional baseball contracts.

Richardson, who was selected in the 15th round of the amateur draft, came to terms with the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday and was assigned to Milwaukee’s Class-A Pioneer League affiliate in Helena, Mont.

Richardson, a junior second baseman from Rialto, led Northridge with a .342 average this season.

McMillin signed as a free agent with the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday and will join the team’s Class-A Northwest League affiliate in Eugene, Ore., this week.

McMillin, a junior outfielder, led Cal Lutheran with a school-record 19 home runs this season. He batted .388 and led the Kingsmen in runs with 59 and in runs batted in with 52.

Cal Lutheran (42-6) sat atop Collegiate Baseball magazine’s NCAA Division III rankings for most of the season before it lost in the national championship game, 3-1, to William Paterson College (36-7) on May 26.

McMillin, a Ventura High graduate, played two seasons at Ventura College. He was an All-Western State Conference first-team selection as a freshman and a second-team selection as a sophomore.

Scia Maumausolo, a multisport athlete at San Diego’s Mt. Carmel High, signed a letter of intent to play softball next year at Cal State Northridge.

Maumausolo, a 5-foot-9 catcher, earned 11 varsity letters at Mt. Carmel in softball (four), volleyball (three), track and field (three) and soccer (one).

This season, Maumausolo hit .554 with five doubles, two triples, three home runs and 23 runs batted in.

Eugene Dreher of Antelope Valley High, who won the state title in the boys’ long jump last Saturday, will attend Antelope Valley College in the fall.

Dreher, an All-Golden League football selection as a linebacker, said he plans to compete in football and track for the Marauders.

Dreher has a personal best of 23 feet 10 1/2 inches in the long jump.

Tony Carruthers of St. Francis High, the runner-up in the boys’ high jump in the Southern Section 1-A Division track and field championships, will attend California in the fall.

Carruthers, who placed seventh in the state championships with a personal best of 6 feet 8 inches, will try to make the Golden Bears’ team as a walk-on.

Robert Nelson of Glendale College, who placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in the state junior college track championships last month, plans to continue his collegiate running career at Adams State (Colo.) College in the spring.

Nelson, the Glendale record-holder in the steeplechase (8 minutes 57.4 seconds), must complete requirements for his Associate in Arts degree in the fall before transferring to Adams State, an NCAA Division II school.

The North Valley Criterium, the Valley’s largest competitive cycling event, will be held Sunday morning in Granada Hills.

The event, a fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society, will feature teams from San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clarita and San Bernardino competing for more than $3,000 in cash and prizes.

Racing will begin at 7:30 near the corner of Chatsworth Street and Zelzah Avenue.
