*** 1/2 Dick Berk and the Jazz Adoption Agency, “Bouncin’ With Berk,” 9 Winds. This rewarding mainstream session spotlights two Los Angeles-based trombone whizzes: Andy Martin on slide and Mike Fahn on valve. Despite similar instruments and styles, the pair are easily distinguished: Martin’s tone is more like a warm feline purr, whereas Fahn’s comes at you like an edgy canine bark. The crisp drummer’s crew avidly addresses such numbers as Nat Adderley’s funky “Jive Samba,” in which pianist Tad Weed crackles, and Weed’s solid 24-bar blues “Flying Highest.”

New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor) to four (excellent). A rating of five stars is reserved for classic reissues or retrospectives.
