Eddie Lopat, a star left-handed pitcher for the New York Yankees’ World Series teams in the 1950s, died Monday after a brief illness. He was 73.

Lopat, who tantalized batters with an array of off-speed pitches, played 12 seasons in the majors, breaking in with the Chicago White Sox in 1944. He was traded to the Yankees in 1948 and pitched on five World Series championship teams with New York, compiling a 4-1 Series record with a 2.60 earned-run average.

Lopat’s career record was 166-112 with a 3.21 ERA.

Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenwich, Conn.
