Rangers’ Messier MVP of NHL; Gretzky Gets Lady Byng Trophy
Mark Messier, the former Edmonton Oiler center who led the New York Rangers to the NHL’s best regular-season record, was named winner of the league’s most-valuable-player award on Tuesday.
It was the second time in three years that the Hart Trophy had gone to Messier, who won it in 1990 when he led Edmonton to the Stanley Cup title.
The Rangers were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by the two-time NHL champion Pittsburgh Penguins.
Messier, traded to the Rangers before the start of the season, led New York with 107 points.
Wayne Gretzky of the Kings, a nine-time MVP, was named winner of the Lady Byng Trophy, which goes to the most gentlemanly player. It was the second consecutive year and third timeoverall Gretzky has won the award.
Pat Quinn, who guided Vancouver to a 96-point season, was selected coach of the year. Quinn was also coach of the year in 1980 with Philadelphia.
