SPORTS NOTES : Two UCLA Women’s Softball Stars Make the Diamond Sparkle
It was a spectacular season for UCLA softball pitcher Lisa Fernandez and outfielder Yvonne Gutierrez.
Fernandez, a junior right-hander out of St. Joseph High School in Lakewood, had a 29-0 record with a 0.14 earned-run average and 22 shutouts.
Among the shutouts was a 2-0 victory over Arizona in the NCAA Division I championship game on Memorial Day. Fernandez finished the season with a string of 65 consecutive scoreless innings.
Gutierrez, a senior who attended Culver City High, batted .406 for the season and established UCLA single-season records in home runs with 11 and runs batted in with 58.
Gutierrez’s two home runs in an 11-1 victory over Massachusetts was an NCAA College World Series single-game record and her three home runs in the series also was a record.
Pepperdine University, coached by Andy Lopez, won the baseball College World Series last month with a 3-2 victory over Cal State Fullerton in the championship game. Among the Pepperdine stars were second baseman Steve Rodriguez and first baseman Dan Melendez.
The Roosevelt High School girls softball team captured the City Section 3-A championship.
Pitcher Gloria Sanchez hurled a one-hitter as Roosevelt beat South Gate, 6-1, in the final game.
