A Santa Paula woman and her 18-year-old daughter were killed and 13 others were injured Sunday in a four-car crash near Palmdale, authorities said.

Roberta E. Soperano, who turned 48 Sunday, and Valerie L. Soperano, 18, died in the 3 p.m. accident on Sierra Highway east of the Antelope Valley Freeway, California Highway Patrol Officer Carol Kelly said. Roberta Soperano’s 17-year-old son, Jonathon, was listed in extremely critical condition at Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, authorities said.

The others suffered moderate or minor injuries, they said.

Jonathon Soperano was driving the car eastbound when for unknown reasons he veered into the westbound lane then swerved back into eastbound lanes, Officer Ruben Deavila said. The teen-ager lost control of the car, veering again into the westbound lane and sideswiping two cars. The Soperanos’ car then spun out of control and was broadsided by a fourth vehicle.
