BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Harvey Will Be Activated Today

Relief pitcher Bryan Harvey will be activated from the disabled list today, as the Angels open a seven-game road trip, and Hubie Brooks will be placed on the list because of a strained neck.

Harvey was placed on the disabled list June 7, after experiencing pain in his elbow while throwing his forkball. He has been pain-free for more than a week. “I’m ready to get it in gear,” he said. “The forkball should come back. I sure hope it will.”

Brooks said his neck injury is related to surgery he underwent in September to repair a herniated disk. “It’s been bothering me for two or three weeks,” said Brooks, who didn’t play Sunday. “I’ve got to see the doctor (today) and get it checked out.”

Right fielder Von Hayes left Sunday’s game after suffering a strained tendon in his left ankle, suffered when he turned the ankle while trying to catch a fly ball hit by Terry Steinbach.

Angel Manager Buck Rodgers lost no time in joining the clubhouse banter during his first visit to Anaheim Stadium since suffering multiple injuries in the team’s May 21 bus accident.

Upon seeing Gary Gaetti, who hit an opposite-field home run Saturday during the Angels’ 10-0 victory, Rodgers pretended to do a double take. “Hey, right-center . . . Are you OK?” Rodgers asked. Gaetti could only laugh.

Rodgers, wheeled into the clubhouse by trainer Rick Smith, joked that he had lost weight during his convalescence, which will last another month. The players, including many who hadn’t seen him since the accident, marveled at how hearty he appeared.

Said Brooks: “Just look at that grin. You know he feels he’s back where he belongs.”
