VENTURA : Outages Hit County Offices and Homes

Two separate electrical outages Monday caused by a downed power line left 2,800 east Ventura customers without electricity, including the Ventura County Government Center, where 7,000 workers are employed.

The first outage hit at 9:51 a.m. and covered the area north of Telephone Road, south of Foothill Road, east of Mills Road and west of Wells Road, said Southern California Edison spokesman Mike Montoya.

Power was restored to most customers, including the government center, about 40 minutes later, Montoya said. But as Edison employees were working just after 11 a.m. to repair the problem in the area of Telegraph Road and Victoria Avenue, power was lost again for about 10 minutes, he said.

Montoya said he did not know what caused the wire to fall.

County employees who use computers were unable to work during the outages, said Bob Hirtensteiner, assistant administrative officer. But other personnel continued to work under a low-wattage emergency lighting system, he said. Superior Court Presiding Judge Steven Z. Perren said his courtroom continued functioning after emergency lights kicked on.

“The light was sufficient to read by and, thus, it was fine,” Perren said.

Edison employees hoped to return electrical service to all customers by early afternoon, Montoya said.
