A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed and his 15-year-old companion was seriously wounded Monday night in a drive-by shooting in Watts that authorities said was gang-related.

Los Angeles Police Sgt. Peter Vanson said that the youths, who were walking in the 9300 block of Maie Avenue, were struck at close range by bullets fired from a white Toyota sedan about 6:15 p.m. after they had exchanged words with the car’s occupants.

The 14-year-old victim was pronounced dead at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center with gunshot wounds to the chest. Fire Department paramedics had worked for nearly half an hour trying to revive him at the scene, Vanson said. The other youth, who was shot in the lower back, was in stable condition at the hospital, police said.
