Sixth-Graders Help Burn Victim

Sixth-graders at St. Angela Merici School in Brea accepted a challenge from the Brea Fire Department to “go the distance” to help send a burn victim to summer camp.

The students collected 530 pounds of aluminum cans to raise $450, the cost to send a child for a week to Champ Camp near Fresno.

It is operated by the Ruch California Burn Foundation to give young burn victims a week of activities.

Irvine attorney Keith P. Bishop, a Harvard University and USC graduate, has been named a contributing editor for California Business Law Reporter.

Santa Ana resident David W. Chonette, partner in the venture capital firm of Brentwood Assn. in Irvine, has been reelected treasurer of the California affiliate of the American Heart Assn.

A total of $25,000 in scholarships were awarded to 31 students by the United Food and Commercial Workers Union 324 in its annual academic and vocational competition.

The grants ranged from $500 to $2,000

The recipients are Jaya Philipose, Alta Loma; Dean Williams, Jarrod Kula, Veronica Geronimo and Brad Speer, Anaheim; Chong Lee, Buena Park; Damian Bailey, Dana Point; Kimberly Hostetler, Downey; Mark Froome, El Toro; Hovannes Daniels, Fountain Valley, and Scott Bauer, Huntington Beach.

Others are Khoi Nguyen, Irvine; Alice Rogers, La Habra; David DeAinza, Laguna Hills; Rafael Thoma, Lake Forest; Steven Quinn, Long Beach; Laura Beisenger, Los Alamitos; Michael Groszkruger, Tracy Ferris and Rex Perez, Mission Viejo, and Tye Masaki, Norwalk.

Also Jule Ketchen, Orange; David Brady, Placentia; Cindi Manning, Redlands; Loc Pham and Lori Munoz, Santa Ana; William Thompson, Trabuco Canyon; Catherine Rich, West Covina; Stephen Gomez, Westminster, and Cora Klotzbach and Daniel Dottilio, Whittier.

Local 324 members are employed in the food, drug, discount, shoe, barber, cosmetology, insurance and pharmacy industries.

Darlene Preciado, a 1987 Irvine High School graduate and recent graduate of USC, has received the Order of Troy award for her creative and innovative contributions to student life at the university.

She has served in a number of positions including resident adviser, orientation adviser, tour guide, teen counselor at halfway houses and has worked weekends to help feed the poor.

Preciado, the daughter of Rose and Dave Preciado of Irvine, received her degree in business administration.

Sea Scouts representing Orange County won honors recently at the 40th annual Ancient Mariner’s Regatta in the San Francisco Bay Area.

All three Orange County Sea Scout ships earned Clipper Class awards by demonstrating their seamanship in 22 competitive events against an estimated 400 Scouts representing 33 ships.

Ship 936, the Mariners of Dana Point, lead by Boatswain Ryan Harrington and Acting Skipper Chris Fox; Ship 939, the Wee Beasties of Dana Point, lead by Boatswain Ed Sayles and Skipper John Walker, and Ship 711, the Del Mars of Newport Beach, lead by Boatswain Scott Drake and Skipper Mike Steward, all scored high in the individual events.

Lisa Choi, Cara Ludusky, Noel Maxey and Alexa Zanolli, fifth-graders at Crown Valley Elementary School in Laguna Niguel, won first place in their grade level at the Orange County Mathematics Field Day event sponsored by the Orange County Mathematics Council. The team outscored 51 participating schools from Orange County.

The Capistrano Unified School District honored Benner Cummings, David Houston and Lee Watson at its recent annual Teachers of the Year banquet.

Watson teaches sixth grade at Ole Hanson Elementary School in San Clemente; Houston teaches at Newhart Middle School in Mission Viejo, and Cummings is a San Clemente High School teacher. They were selected from a list of 1,200 teachers.
