Lottery officials just don’t get it (June 17-18). They wonder at the decreasing sale of tickets.
When the 6/49 game was offered the odds of winning were incredibly small, but players were willing to take a chance. When the game was changed to 53 numbers, the odds against winning were greatly increased. Players balked, and quit playing entirely. Lottery officials seem to think the public wants larger payoffs for one winner, when in reality players would be more inclined to participate if there were more winners sharing the jackpot. It’s time to rethink lottery rules. No amount of advertising will induce players to buy tickets, until some changes are made.
