SAN DIEGO : Aftershock Blamed in Bedroom Fire

Share

A lamp apparently toppled by an earthquake aftershock ignited a fire in a San Diego home early Monday, fire officials said.

No one was injured in the blaze, which destroyed a bedroom about 8 a.m., officials said.

A 12-year-old girl discovered the fire in the Navy housing unit at 10076 Bordelon St. She alerted the other two people in the home at the time, firefighter Jeff Jackson said. The home’s smoke detectors did not work, he added.

It took 20 firefighters about 12 minutes to control the fire, which was largely confined to the bedroom, Fire Department spokesman Thom Morris said.

Jackson said the fire was traced to a touch-sensitive lamp, which apparently was knocked over in one of the morning’s strong aftershocks to Sunday’s 7.4- and 6.5-magnitude earthquakes in Yucca Valley and Big Bear.

Monday morning’s four strongest aftershocks to the twin tremors measured from 4.9 to 5.4 on the Richter scale.

The lamp fell against a bed and ignited it, Jackson said. Damage was estimated at $40,000.
