BASEBALL: DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Athletics Put Stewart on Disabled List
The Oakland Athletics put Dave Stewart on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore elbow and called up right-hander Jim Corsi from Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League. Stewart is 7-5 with a 3.96 ERA in 17 starts. He pitched 111 1/3 innings this season. . . . The A’s also signed right-hander Kelly Downs and moved catcher Scott Hemond from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL to make room for Downs. . . . New York Yankee outfielder Jesse Barfield underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left wrist and will be lost for at least a month. . . . About half the players on the New York Yankees showed up at the Major League Players Assn. to offer testimony on behalf of Steve Howe as the pitcher’s grievance hearing continued before arbitrator George Nicolau. . . . The Houston Astros could be sold to Texas trucking magnate Drayton McLane, if owner John McMullen can complete negotiations in the next three weeks, McLane said. The Astros’ worth has been estimated from $75 million to $100 million.
