William Daugherty; Retired Insurance Broker

William Moss Daugherty, a retired insurance broker who was active with several organizations, has died at a Glendale hospital. He was 83.

A longtime Glendale resident, Daugherty died Thursday of a heart attack, said his son, Jim Daugherty of Mission Viejo.

Born in Valley View, Ky., Daugherty earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky and came to California in the mid-1930s. He worked as an insurance broker for Johnson & Higgins of California for 39 years, specializing in oil refinery insurance later in his career. Daugherty retired in the mid-1970s as vice president of the firm’s Los Angeles branch.

He served as president of the Insurance Brokers Society of Southern California in 1959 and was a former commissioner of the Verdugo Hills Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Daugherty belonged to the Jonathan Club, Town Hall Club of Los Angeles and Delta Chi fraternity. After he retired, Daugherty volunteered as a docent at the Los Angeles County Museum of Science and Industry and also helped train other docents.

In addition to his son, Daugherty is survived by his wife of 61 years, Madalene Daugherty; daughters Kathryn Genson of Tarzana and Susanne Heide of Minneapolis; brother Charles Daugherty, and sisters Blanche Hovater and Lorrainne McMurtry, all of Nicholasville, Ky., and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Scovern Mortuary, 1434 Kenneth Road in Glendale, which is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Daugherty’s name to the American Heart Assn.
