Finding Right Home for the English Derby
Jay Hovdey obviously wasn’t an eyewitness at the horse race he identifies as the “English Derby” in his article of June 12. The race is officially identified as the “Eveready Derby” and is run at Epsom Downs, not Newmarket, which is about 100 miles away. Epsom Downs is close to the estate of Lord Derby, who lent his name to horse racing.
The English don’t mispronounce “Derby” as “Darby,” it’s the spelling. Early written English had variations on use of each character.
