The Detroit Tigers turned a triple play during the fifth inning of their 6-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners in the first game of a doubleheader at Detroit.

Seattle had Dave Valle on third and Harold Reynolds on first with Omar Vizquel batting, leading 3-0. Manager Sparky Anderson brought in Walt Terrell to relieve starter Mark Leiter.

After taking the first pitch, Vizquel tried to lay down a squeeze bunt, but popped it up. Third baseman Skeeter Barnes caught the ball, tagged Valle, and threw to first baseman Cecil Fielder to get Reynolds. It was Detroit’s first triple play since Aug. 20, 1980, in Milwaukee.

Steve Howe’s grievance hearing, expected to conclude Friday, will continue next week because the players association wants to investigate alleged pressuring of witnesses by Commissioner Fay Vincent.

Officials of the players association want to interview General Manager Gene Michael, Manager Buck Showalter and executive Jack Lawn of the New York Yankees. The three were summoned to meet with Vincent on Wednesday, a day after they testified and disagreed with the commissioner’s decision to impose a lifetime ban on Howe for his seventh drug- or alcohol-related offense.

Barry Bonds, out of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ lineup for nearly three weeks because of a strained rib cage muscle, will be activated for today’s game against Cincinnati. . . . The Pirates acquired outfielder Alex Cole from the Cleveland Indians for minor leaguers Tony Mitchell and John Carter.

Outfielder Tony Gwynn of the San Diego Padres said that he is baffled by a strained lower back that forced him out of the lineup, and isn’t sure when he will return. Gwynn didn’t start Friday night. . . . Boston right-hander Roger Clemens was given anti-inflammatory drugs for a painful right foot, the team said.
