SEASONS OF THE MOOSE text by Jennie Promack, photographs by Thomas J. Sanker (Gibbs-Smith: $17.95) . Standing over six feet high at the withers and weighing more than 1,100 pounds, the bull moose ranks among the largest North American land mammals. This pleasant, brief study traces the lives of a small group of Shiras Moose (Alces alces shirasi) , one of four subspecies, through the cycle of a single year in the Yellowstone back country. (Unlike other members of the deer family, moose are generally solitary and do not form herds.) Promack tends to anthropomorphize her subjects, but her brief text is certainly readable. Sanker’s dramatic photographs capture the curious mixture of elegant power and comic gawkiness that characterize the moose.
