BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Harvey Is Put on DL Again

Share

As expected, Bryan Harvey was put on the disabled list again Saturday because of soreness in his right elbow. Right-hander Tim Butcher, who was 5-2 with four saves for triple-A Edmonton in 26 relief appearances, was recalled from the Trappers and is expected to join the Angels today.

“We tried it once and it didn’t work,” interim Manager John Wathan said of bringing Harvey off of the disabled list. “He threw (Friday) and it bothered him again. We have the advantage here of three days off for the All-Star break . . . Butcher is unproven, but this is a good time to see what he can do. We all liked his arm in spring training.”

Harvey acknowledged that a move had to be made. “It was putting the bullpen in a tough situation, if they sent Ike (Mark Eichhorn) and Joe (Grahe) and (Steve) Frey out to set it up and I can’t close,” he said. “It’s definitely been a frustrating year so far.”

Although they would like to give outfielder Tim Salmon a full season at the triple-A level, the Angels are considering promoting him before rosters expand to 40 in September.

Salmon, 23, has led the Pacific Coast League in hitting and runs batted in for most of this season, keeping his batting average about .370.

“We’d like to leave him there, but it’s not etched in stone,” said Whitey Herzog, club senior vice president. “I’m not saying we wouldn’t do it.”

Pitcher Pete Janicki, the Angels’ first-round draft pick, might return for his senior season at UCLA because of what a source familiar with his situation described as “bumbling inefficiency” by the Angels. “He may return to UCLA out of spite,” the source said.

After abandoning his Olympic tryout, Janicki took a vacation and was unaware of two medical appointments the Angels scheduled for him, the source said. “He’s been checked by his own orthopedist and is fine,” the source said. “There’s nothing wrong physically, but he isn’t happy that the Angels have made it look like he skipped out on the appointments, and he certainly isn’t happy with the (signing) offer.”

Angel Senior Vice President Dan O’Brien said Janicki knew of the appointments. “I told his father, sitting at the table at lunch, about the first one. I know that myself,” O’Brien said.

Junior Felix had his first multi-RBI game since June 13, getting two . . . Von Hayes’ fifth-inning RBI was his first on the road since May 24. He was ejected for the first time this season after he struck out during the eighth inning and yelled to home plate umpire Larry McCoy from the dugout . . . The Blue Jays’ team in the Dominican summer league won its 30th consecutive game Saturday, a professional baseball record.
