SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Two San Diego County sheriff’s deputies suffered minor stab wounds Tuesday after they responded to a call in which an El Cajon-area man also allegedly stabbed his mother and sister, officials said.

Deputies David Weldon, 26, and Kevin Barrett, 29, were attacked at 4:40 a.m. while trying to arrest the suspect in his apartment in the 1400 block of Graves Avenue, Sgt. Glenn Revell said. Their wounds and those suffered by the two women were not serious, officials said.

Michael Eric McKinney, 26, was arrested and booked into County Jail downtown on four counts of assault with a deadly weapon, Revell said.

Relatives told deputies that McKinney had been under psychiatric care and may not have been taking his medication, Revell said, adding that McKinney would receive any necessary psychiatric treatment at the jail.

The deputies had responded to a 911 call by a woman who said her brother had stabbed her and was fighting with their mother.

When deputies arrived at the apartment building in an unincorporated area near El Cajon, they found the mother, identified by hospital officials as Mae Chapman, 50, in the parking lot with a stab wound near one eye, Revell said. The sister, identified as Loria Perkins, 21, was in a neighbor’s apartment.

The door to McKinney’s apartment was open, and Weldon and Barrett found him in the back bedroom, Revell said. They ordered him at gunpoint to drop a 6-inch kitchen knife.

He complied, but when Weldon holstered his gun and approached McKinney to handcuff him, McKinney spun around and dove for the knife, Revell said. Weldon tackled McKinney from behind, and, while both deputies struggled to subdue him, he managed to pick up the knife and slash at them.

Weldon suffered a stab wound to the neck, a cut elbow and a sprained ankle. Barrett also sprained his ankle and suffered cuts and scrapes on his arm. Both were treated at Grossmont Hospital and released later Tuesday, Revell said.

Perkins was in good condition at Sharp Hospital with a single stab wound in the back and was expected to be released late Tuesday, hospital spokesman Kenn Ulrich said.

Chapman was treated at Grossmont Hospital and released.
